Dr. Sam Parnia, author of a book on resuscitation science titled Erasing Death, says his research shows that death can actually be reversed in some cases. Dr. Parnia, who is also head of intensive care at the Stony Brook University Hospital in New York, says, “In the past decade we have seen tremendous progress. With today’s medicine, we can bring people back to life up to one, maybe two hours, sometimes even longer, after the heart stopped beating and they have thus died by circulatory failure. In the future, we will likely get better at reversing death.” Dr. Parnia’s technique preserves brain cells by cooling the body down, which allows more time to fix the problem and get the heart beating again. He believes that, within the next 20 years, doctors will be able to bring people back to life up to 12 or 24 hours after they have died.
