How often do you text your significant other? Sending too many texts may be harmful to your relationship, a new study by Brigham Young University has found.
How often you text doesn’t determine how stable your relationship is, either, since researchers found that women tend to think more texting means a better relationship, while men tend to think the opposite. Many times, we fire off text messages without really thinking them through.
As Lori Shade, a marriage and family therapist and lead author of the study, says, “Face to face you can raise your voice. The way to do that with texting is to be more aggressive in language. They do it quickly without a lot of thought. But there may be unintended consequences.”
Shade says we also tend to keep the conversation going, even though we know it’s not heading in the right direction. Instead, she says we should slow down and think things through, or simply ask to talk in person. Researchers did find, however, that texting positive affirmations may help to neutralize the negative comments.
