In addition to dealing with the aftermath of 9/11 at ground zero and losing four members of his team, former New York firefighter P.J. Schrantz was also dealing with his 5-year-old son Dustin’s fight against leukemia.
Schrantz lost his son and knows how difficult the fight against leukemia can be, so he started Wishgivers.org to help pay for medical expenses and entertainment for other first responders with sick children.
Schrantz says, “Right now as we speak, there are firefighters running into a burning building, there are police officers putting their lives on the line, there are men and women in camouflage uniforms on foreign lands fighting to protect our freedom and thousands of those heroes have critically ill children.” Schrantz thinks of his work at New York-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital as a way to honor his son.
