Children are increasingly using cell phones and other devices, but do we really know the health impact this is having? Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) are emitted from cell phones as well as other household electronics that we use daily, and can be especially harmful for little ones because their immune systems are still developing. EMFs from these devices can cause problems ranging from dizziness and headaches to more serious conditions such as cancer. Children absorb more electromagnetic radiation than adults because they are heavy users of WiFi-enabled devices and are even using them in school. As researcher Dr. Kerry Crofton says, “We don’t have to give up all electronic devices, but we do need to use them differently. First, we need to understand that the government standards we assume are protecting us are thousands of times too lenient, and there are biological effects for these ‘safe’ levels.” Some experts worry about the impact of long-term exposure and the effect it can have on cells, especially in the brain. To decrease exposure, experts recommend using cell phones less or using headsets during calls. Parents should monitor their children’s cell phone use to help reduce exposure.
