Can your cell phone cause cancer? The question was recently revisited by researchers in Israel, who found that those who used cell phones frequently had more signs of oxidative stress, which causes cell damage and harms DNA. According to Yaniv Hamzany, an ear, nose and throat specialist and lead author of the study, "It does give us an idea of the harmful effect of the telephone. Maybe use it less often, maybe not expose children to it. Maybe there is a kind of additive effect, and in the long run it could cause tumors." This supports previous research linking frequent cell phone use to cancer, but researchers say it may take decades before this link can be definitively proven. Robert Baan, a toxicologist and biochemist who organized a 2011 study on the topic, recommends using earphones when talking on a cell phone in order to reduce harmful exposure.
