Berry Brazelton, one of the nation's most renowned pediatricians and a leading pioneer in early childhood development, is celebrating his 95th birthday this month with the publication of his memoir, Learning to Listen: A Life Caring for Children. Brazelton says of his greatest contribution to the world of child development, "The Brazelton Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale (which is used in hospitals around the world to interpret a newborn's behaviors) changed the way the world looks at babies. Prior to that, people assumed that babies were all the same and that it was parenting and the environment that made the difference. What I saw was that babies were born with differences… We were blaming parents for everything that went wrong with babies. I thought if I could assess these babies early and identify the ones who were significantly different, we could use this in understanding the child more and give the parents a better chance of understanding the child too."
