Yet another reason to exercise that may surprise and motivate you! New research found that regularly exercising can keep your skin looking youthful and even reverse some of the effects of aging.
“[What] it shows is that exercise is something we should be doing not just for our hearts and our brains and to lower cancer risk, but also it’s going to make our skin healthier,” explains Dr. Mark Tarnopolsky, a professor of exercise science and pediatrics who worked on the study at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada.
Volunteers in the study who exercised at least 3 hours per week had noticeably younger looking skin. The protective outer layer of the skin is known as the stratum corneum. As we get older, it becomes drier and more prone to sagging. That’s in part, because the outer layer is the one that is most susceptible to damage from the sun. But the stratum corneum of participants age 40+ who exercised routinely appeared to be much healthier.
Dr. Tarnopolsky says, “I don’t want to over-hype the results, but, really, it was pretty remarkable to see.” He adds: “It is astonishing to consider all of the intricate ways in which exercise changes our bodies.” So now that you know exercise can also be good for your skin, will you be more motivated to do it on a regular basis? We’d like to hear from you.
