Jackie Turner, a junior at William Jessup University, had a troubled childhood and didn’t have a family with whom to celebrate the Christmas season. So she decided to put an ad on Craigslist to rent a family for the holidays, and the response she got blew her away.
Even though she offered eight dollars to spend some quality time with some loving strangers, responses poured in from parents and others with similar situations willing to spend the holiday with her free of charge.
“People are hurting and broken and we need each other. We need to be loving people,” Turner says. She gathered everyone together and helped to match others like herself with families for the holidays. Turner paired herself with Anita Hermsmeier, who works in student services at her university, knowing that their time together would make for a much merrier Christmas than she’d ever had in the past.
