Organic milk is better for you because it contains more omega-3 fatty acids (which help keep your heart healthy) than nonorganic milk, a large-scale study has found. Researchers also found that nonorganic milk has more omega-6 fats, which can increase inflammation levels and the risk of disease. Omega-6 fats need to have a healthy ratio to omega-3s, and that ratio is better in organic milk.
Regulations call for cows that produce organic milk to be fed a healthier diet, which allows them to produce healthier milk. Study coauthor Donald R. Davis from Washington State University, elaborates: “Over the last 20 years or so, conventional dairies have increasingly cut down on the amount of pasture feeding that dairy cows get, and have increased the amount of diet that comes from high-energy concentrates which consist of corn and soybeans. These are very unnatural sources of food for cows.”
However, it’s important to note that the research is based on organic whole milk specifically, so the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3s might not be the same in skim milk, for example. Plus, organic milk has other benefits, since the cows’ feed doesn’t contain antibiotics, growth hormones, GMOs or pesticides.
