Are you mentally strong? Ann Morin, a psychotherapist and licensed clinical social worker, created a list of 13 things to avoid doing if you want to be mentally strong, which she posted on LifeHack. Writer Cheryl Conner says that she was so taken with what Morin had to say, that she decided not only to share the list, but to give her take on each item as it relates to entrepreneurs.
#1 on Morin’s list is to not spend a lot of time feeling sorry for yourself. Conner writes that what mentally strong people have in common is their ability “to take responsibility for their actions and outcomes.” They understand that “frequently life is not fair. They are able to emerge from trying circumstances with self-awareness and gratitude for life lessons learned.”
Another pitfall to avoid is getting stuck in the past or repeating mistakes you’ve made. And don’t quit just because you feel you failed. As Conner puts it, “Every failure is a chance to improve. Even the greatest entrepreneurs are willing to admit that their early efforts invariably brought many failures.”
And last but not least, because mentally strong people avoid “expecting immediate results,” Conner says they are able to “celebrate each milestone and increment of success along the way.”
