Do you wear antibacterial workout gear? This type of clothing contains nanoparticles of silver, which help to kill bacteria and fight odor, but you may be exposed to a harmful amount. A study published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology has found that you actually absorb the silver particles through your skin when you sweat. Previous research has shown that this type of exposure can be harmful to the functioning of our lungs, liver and kidneys. According to the National Institutes of Health, exposure to too much silver can also lead to a skin condition known as argyria, which cannot be treated and causes the skin to turn a bluish-gray color. Instead of wearing antibacterial workout clothing to prevent odor, try pretreating and laundering your gear with care after a workout. Allowing your clothes to dry outside also helps to eliminate odor and extend the life of your clothes.
