Los Angeles Times, 6/22/13While some women opt to have their babies at home, some are looking to redefine the more traditional experience of giving birth in a hospital by bringing movement into the delivery room. Cedars-Sinai Medical Center’s new “Rock-and-Roll” program encourages women to move and change positions about every 20 minutes, since staying in bed can slow down labor and increase both the need for medication and the risk of a C-section. The program has reduced C-sections by 8% and has also shortened the duration of labor by 20%. Additionally, “There seems to be more willingness among [obstetricians and] anesthesiologists to involve the dad/partner into the process, and even to welcome doulas and midwives into the delivery room, whether it is caesarean or vaginal delivery,” says Dr. William Camann, director of obstetric anesthesiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
