“Cardiorespiratory fitness is a modifiable indicator of long term mortality and healthcare professionals should encourage patients to achieve and maintain high levels of fitness.”

That’s the conclusion of a new study published in the journal JAMA Network Open.

Dr. Wael Jaber, senior author and cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic, says

“being unfit should be considered as strong of a risk factor as hypertension, diabetes and smoking, if not stronger than all of them.”

He referred to the study’s results as “extremely surprising.” But goes on to say this about a sedentary lifestyle:

“It should be treated almost as a disease that has a prescription, which is called exercise.”

He points out, “There’s no age limit that doesn’t benefit from being physically fit.”
